THE LIST: 5 DENIM STYLES TO LUST OVER THIS WINTER

DISTRESSED BLACK DENIM

Lived in black denim is a true style essential that will always be current. It is one type of denim that is on heavy rotation in my closet, and I usually wear it at least once a week. When editing looks for the week, it is an easy option to style up or down, so it is one of my favorite pieces to have.

Distressed black denim favorite features:

  • Slightly edgy
  • Goes with everything
  • Easily elevates your look

These Nili Lotan Mid Rise Jean in Distressed Black are extremely well made, and the fit is sleek yet still relaxed. They would be a great addition to any closet.

I styled this look with a casual day around town in mind. I added my favorite Golden Goose tennies, a John Elliot sweatshirt, and a fun Rag & Bone leather jacket. I love this simple elevated everyday look.

Other styling options:

  • Pair with an oversized sweater and chunky combat boots
  • Add booties, a sweater, and flat brim hat
  • Dress them up with a heel or bootie and a fun patterned top

*I personally purchased this pair of denim and absolutely love them.

WINTER WHITE DENIM

If done correctly, wearing white after Labor Day is one of my favorite fashion rules to break.

There is something extremely lux about an all white or muted beige-toned outfit (especially in wintertime), and it is one of my favorite go- to winter looks.

Winter white denim favorite features:

  • Effortlessly chic
  • Always on-trend
  • Stands out in a crowd

My newest favorite white denim look is The Hustler Ankle Fray in Ivory from MOTHER. On top of being winter white, the distressing at the ankle makes this pair of denim extra special.

I styled this look for a fun girls lunch, with a 360 Cashmere turtleneck and some Isabel Marant ankle booties. I love how easy it was to throw together.

Other styling options:

  • Pair with a nude heel and jewel toned top for another fun winter look
  • Dress it down with UGGS and a casual tee/sweatshirt
  • Add a cute pair of slides or flats and sweater for a cute day look

*This is another pair that I personally purchased from Tula.

STRAIGHT LEG CROP DENIM:

The straight leg crop has been the denim style I’ve been waiting on for years. I always find myself rolling up my skinny denim to show a little ankle, so I’m beyond excited that this style has become the new denim must have. This pair of jeans can be styled in so many ways.

Straight leg crop favorite features:

  • 1000+ ways to style
  • Very flattering
  • Practical for everyday

This specific pair is the SLVRLAKE Lou Lou Jean.

I styled this look as an elevated everyday outfit. The oversized Anine Bing sweatshirt and long black Vince coat are so opposite that it works. I love that the Rag & Bone booties to tie it all together.

Other styling options:

  • Add a statement tennie and a casual tee for a quick and easy day look
  • Pair with a cute bootie, oversized sweater and a flat brim hat
  • Dress it up with a knee high boot and a fancy top

*These are probably my most favorite recent purchase, and I’ve already worn them several times.

CROPPED FLARE DENIM

Out of all the styles on this list, the cropped flare was the hardest for me to embrace. Because I have really short legs, I was worried the look wouldn’t look good on me. But, once I figured out how to style them, I’ve fallen in love.

Cropped flare favorite features:

  • Fun and trendy
  • Casual everyday
  • Updated and fresh

The RE/DONE High-Rise Stove Pipe Jean is a high-rise fit in a lighter wash.

Styled here with a comfy 360 Cashmere cardigan and a Rag & Bone Tee, these jeans are great for everyday comfort. They are the perfect fit for around the house with the kids, but can transition easily to a elevated bopping around town look.

Other styling options:

  • Add uggs and a sweater for a comfy day look
  • Pair with flats, a tee, and a cardigan for a cute/casual work look
  • Dress it up with a heel and nice sweater

LIGHT WASH DENIM

The light wash denim is not my typical pick when choosing denim. Personally, I usually gravitate towards a darker wash, but recently I have been loving the fun, casual vibe of a light wash. Its a great way to have a fresh and fun update.

Light wash favorite features:

  • Great for everyday
  • Tried and true
  • Casual queen

This Rag & Bone Cate Mid-Rise Ankle Skinny is the perfect pair of light wash denim. They are super comfortable and very practical. I had a hard time deciding what to pair with them, because there were so many options.

Here, I paired them with an oversized grey sweater and golden goose tennies for a simple, elevated everyday look. This is an outfit I could see myself running errands in and still being comfortable when I get home.

Other styling options:

  • Add a cute winter boot and jacket for a outdoor hike
  • Play around with graphic tees and statement tennies
  • Cute with UGGS, a sweatshirt, and beanie

Also, there are a ton of other options included in the Denim and Diamonds sale with Tula. If you don’t see something here you like, you can check out the full Denim and Diamonds collection at Tula.

MY PERSONAL DENIM BUYING TIPS + TRICKS:

Stop worrying about size. There is no industry standard for sizing in denim. So, your size in one brand can differ considerably in another brand. I used to get really caught up in size. If I didn’t fit in a certain size in a certain brand, I wouldn’t get the jeans. Now, I focus on what’s comfortable and looks best. I have also noticed that sizes can differ from season to season. For example, I have two pairs of size 27 jeans from J-Brand (one of my favorite denim brands) that were purchased about 6 years apart. The sizes are completely different. I can barely get the old pair about my knees, while the new pair fits perfectly.

Always shop for comfort. You are paying way too much money for premium denim to be uncomfortable. Ultimately, if the jeans are uncomfortable, you will likely never wear them or they will be very hard to style.

Invest in denim that can be styled more than one way. When I’m in store, I always try the denim with several different tops and shoe options. If I can only find one way I like them, then I usually don’t buy. There are always a few pairs of denim that I try that can only look good with a certain top or shoe option. Its not worth the money, if I can’t style them several different ways.

Always be aware of rise and what works best for you. We are all in different seasons of life, and we certainly are all shaped different. One thing I know, is that low-rise does not and will not ever work for me. As a mom, I have way to much stuff going on in my mid-section to try to squeeze into low-rise. So, when shopping, I always ask for mid to high rise. This way I don’t feel bad when I accidentally put on a pair of low rise.

Inquire about stretch. In my opinion, there is nothing worse than loosing the tightness of your jeans throughout the day. When I put them on in the morning, I want them to look the same way when I come home. So, I always ask about fabric content and which pairs will hold their shape. Some people really love stretch. So, this is also important for you on the opposite end of the spectrum. Inquiring about stretch allows you to find what you want.
